While Russell officially launched Old Sparta Gunworks in 2026, his work is backed by a lifetime of hands-on experience. He is a gunsmith and woodworker who has been repairing, tuning, and modifying firearms for more than 30 years. What started as a deep respect for the mechanics of firearms has evolved into a high-precision workshop right here in Tarboro, North Carolina.

Art Meets Technology

Craftsmanship runs in Russell’s blood. His grandfather was a fine woodworker, his mother was a professional artist and illustrator, and his grandmother was a professional artist and sculptor trained in Paris in the 1930s. He received tutelage from each and carries that creative lineage forward by merging classical design with modern engineering.

Today, he bridges old-school artistry with cutting-edge technology, focusing on two primary capabilities:

• Precision Laser Engraving: Using an advanced MOPA fiber laser, his primary focus is firearms customization, deep-metal engraving, and NFA compliance markings. However, his capabilities span far beyond firearms. He regularly designs custom artwork and executes projects ranging from business promotional gear and corporate awards to personalized, custom gifts.

• 3D Print Design & Custom Fabrication: He designs and prints original, functional components and specialized solutions, utilizing engineering-grade filaments built to handle hard, real-world use.
